silos to the south coming down
Up to Neighborhood Discussion
I spoke to someone two weeks ago who told me that the 8 attached concrete silos to the south would be coming down soon. I now see that the work has begun. They will not implode them, so no exciting pyrotechnics. Instead they will do it peicemeal. The same person told me that if the Olymic Village will be built it is now planned for directly south of us instead of to the southeast as originally planned? We shall see!
Speaking of power plants, the one by us in LIC has been violating emissions standards by A LOT.
We're mentioned about halfway through the article.
I was amazed that more people didn't fight the plant in LIC when they were going to install it. An issue like this affects EVERYONE in the community...dog owners, non-dog owners, families with kids, families without kids, rich, poor, middle-class...EVERYBODY and yet there wasn't a huge outcry. There was something outcry, but not on the level you'd expect. Then I think maybe I just like to complain.
Anyways, here's the link to the article in today's (8/14) Daily News.

silos to the south coming down
I think it's highly doubtful that the Olympic Village (if it's coming here at all) would be built on Phase IV. That section was designated (by QWDC) for commercial development and has also been assigned a deep pocket developer, LCOR. Phase III, which is planned as a residential neighborhood, would fit the picture better, by avoiding extra conflicts with QWDC. Changing the map (as it was designed by urban planners) is akin to pulling teeth. QWDC has historically been very difficult to persuade for any parcel lot alterations.
I'm glad that those silos are coming down! I read that they were going to start demolition by yearend, so it's such a surprise to see something happening faster than expected!
There has been no change to the Olympic Village site since it was first proposed. It was always supposed to take over the development of Parcel 3 at the southern tip as well as extending to the east along Newton Creek. That's why some politicians have been against it since it will interfere with the Queens West master plan. I for one would love to see the Olympic Village here. It would give a huge jumpstart to the neighborhood.
With the lot to the north that Rockrose is getting ready to demolish, the silos, the old Daily News plant at the southern most point(set to start demolition by yearend), there's alot of demolition going on. Now, if they would only start to actually build something! And, finish Peninsula Park!
