What is the proper amount to tip the doormen?
Up to Riverview Discussion
Given the high turnonver and lack of consistency, what is the proper amount to tip the doormen in the Riverview buildings? Also, does anyone know how many doormen Riverview North has?
Lisa, are you referring to regular tips for when they help you bring something to your apt or a holiday tip because they've somehow made a difference in your life?
those are just holiday tip guides jake... and extremely generous holiday tip guides at that... more like guides on "how to make the people around you feel small by giving them extraordinarily large tips even though they are employed by somebody else that already takes care of their christmas bonus"
with regards to regular tipping for the doormen, i guess it depends on what you have them do... if you made a guy haul $200 dollars of groceries during the elevator rush hour, then yeah, he deserves at least a couple bucks... the guys who walk the dogs and work the baggage cart to bring stuff up are generally really nice people and are pretty good about at least remembering your face, they deserve tips...
as for the girls who work behind the desk and do nothing but say "hi, how can i help you" when you approach, they don't really do anything, most of the time they don't even smile, and they will generally not have any answer to your question... i don't see any reason to tip them... if they made any kind of consistent effort to know your name, to wish you well as you leave in the morning, or to greet you as you come home; then maybe some kind of holiday tip would be nice

The stat I read from years back is less than 50% of the people tip in the holidays, so my feelings has been even if all you can do is just a little bit, and you want to, it is much better than nothing.
Again, tipping is a very personal thing and deals with money which makes some people uncomfortable to talk about (salary, property, etc).
The guides are just that, guides.
