ARN steep rent increase - negotiable?

Posted by javerich at May 24. 2008

Hi,

So, while I'm thrilled about the upcoming opening of the pool and deck, I was horrified to see the offer for my lease renewal.  They're raising my rent TWELVE percent.  I knew I'd be priced out in a few years but didn't expect it after one!

Has anyone renewed their lease yet?  Is Avalon willing to negotiate at all, or are they just a faceless corporation and you pay what they say?

With a heavy sigh and a pool towel,

R

I am in the older Riverview and just received our lease renewal.  It is about 5-6%.  I was still shocked.  12% seems ridiculous.  I think you should negotiate, although my understanding was that a lot of people got a very good deal on the rent in the newer building about a year ago.  We were paying market all along in the older bulidling. (2400 for 1 bedroom last year).

Don't bother renewing, the prices are equivalent of what you can get in like midtown manhattan, unless you work in LIC.

12% would be nice, we just received the letter and it's 20%. Can you believe it? 20%!!! This must be illegal, is it not? I know people who got 12%, tried to negotiate and got nowhere! So yes, faceless corporation trying to take advantage of people.

I also got my Renewal and its 20% superb ridiculous....It is not acceptable, but practically can do nothing. We live in a 2BR, and looking intensively....but 20% shocked us big time......
