Going Green - Tips, Hints & Ideas
Up to The Lounge
I had a brain cramp while writing my previous post.
This is what I said in the second paragraph: "If the total daily consumption by "green" accounts is equal to or less than the total daily "green" accounts' consumption, then I guess you could hypothetically and for all practical purposes say, that their power came from "green" sources."
This is what I meant to say: If the total daily consumption by "green" accounts is equal to or less than the total daily "green" power being generated, then I guess you could hypothetically and for all practical purposes say, that their power came from "green" sources."
The portion in error, and then corrected, is in bold type. My apologies. Sometimes the fingers do the walking, without the brain doing the talking.
The algae thing sounds very interesting and realistic, for both oil based fuels and for the production of ethanol. The carbon being sequestered which he refers to in the video clip, is going directly into biomass. It is only temporarily sequestering the carbon, until it's re-release upon combustion, and in the biomass breakdown/redistribution of the end product, in the form of animal feed and fertilizer. Temporary is good in itself, because it's keeping with the carbon cycle. Permanent (extremely long term) carbon sequestering involves buried organic bio matter such as peat, oil, coal, methane hydrate, or in the form of calcium carbonate and other carbon containing minerals. We are releasing way to much of this sequestered carbon, from both the temporary (forests, for example) and the long term caches.
There are four prime elements, essential for life as we know it, to exist: Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen. I like to refer to them as the "Quadriad of life". There are the four cycles which exist, due to the interactions between our atmosphere, our hydrosphere, and life. There's the Carbon Cycle, The Water Cycle (which is how hydrogen gets cycled, otherwise it would rise to the upper atmosphere and escape into space), the Oxygen Cycle, and the Nitrogen Cycle. It is the Carbon Cycle that we are royally screwing up.
I'm surprised the person in the video clip referred to algae as plants. Though they do resemble plants (especially seaweed), they are not. They are classified in two separate kingdoms.

More reasons why we should not use a food source for fuel: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7472532.stm
Large government subsides to satisfy being green has devastating unintended consequences.
Wow, I'm surprised it took me so long to get back to this thread. I just don't know what I was thinking
Yea, using food sources as fuel, in the way it has, coupled with worldwide crop failures due to all sorts of things, has helped in the creation of major problems, everywhere. I must say though, the algae thing looks very promising.
Anyway, torn80, that's a very good idea, stemming from a good observation, with good analysis and implementation. Others in these high-rises should try it. If it works for more than a few, then spread the word and pass it on!
