One step closer to losing their views

Looks like the Hunter's Point south development is another step closer. I guess some of those views are not going to be around much longer. Knowing the city this should take about ten years. What do they mean when they say "affordable housing"? Is that code for projects? Great one big construction zone for the next 10 years and when it's done, it will be filled with people who paid a fraction and got a better view. this is a sad day.

I have heard various rumors that "afforable housing" in this area will be qualified as a family that makes NO MORE than $175,000.00. This "affordable housing" is hardly going to be like the projects over by the Queensboro Bridge. I also heard that it will be somewhat of a lottery where the housing will be only open to people from our neighborhood and surrounding areas (like Sunnyside).

To me, this sounds like a great opportunity for local people with honest livings (policemen, teachers, firemen and whatnot) who have unfortunately had to relocate because they've been priced out by "us" moving in.

But this is all hearsay. I'd be curious to hear how this actually will play out though.

I hope you aren't impling that those of us with a specific skill set that went after higher paying jobs aren't earning an "honest living".  If someone made a choice to go into a certain profession knowing full well what their earning potential would be, they should not be subsidized on the purchase of a home.  They should have to live within the means of the salary for the profession they chose, just like the rest of "us".

Afterall, most of "us" were priced out of Manhattan and settled in Long Island City.  So why aren't you preaching for someone to subsidize "us" so we can live on the Upper East Side in new condo's with Central Park Views??

nc1981,

First of all, at the present time these are not for purchase but will be rentals. Because of how they will be funded for development a certain percentage will be "affordable" with the rest being market. I am glad you make so much money that you can afford to buy but many of us actually make a decent salary that any where outside of NYC would be alot of money but here does't buy squat. Sorry you were priced out of Manhattan and had to "settle" for LIC which is actually Hunters Point. Many of us chose to live here and have lived here for a long time and would have loved to own something. Why does everything that gets built in this neighborhood have to be Luxury? As some one on this board once said to me about buying a place in Hunters Point, if you want to live on the upper eastside w/ park views, save your money and do what it takes!!! Otherwise quit complaining. If anyone has a right to complain it is the person who has lived here predevelopment, lost thier views of Manhattan to ugly highrises and had to put up with people like you who seem to have a sense of entitlement because you spent alot of money to "settle" here.

That was a pretty dumb comment by John Doe.  He says some of the stupidest things on this board.  The Hunters Point South development will be privately run and managed, this is not some City-run housing project.  A percentage of the units will be available to middle-income renters through a lottery, and the rest will be free-market, with some possible condo development.
