Posted by Jake at January 22. 2010
There is a media event today at 7:30AM at the Vernon/Jackson station to raise support for a shuttle bus into NYC when they close down the seven train (which they are going to do more of this year).

Be there or be square.

***MEDIA ADVISORY***
NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL SPEAKER CHRISTINE C. QUINN, COUNCIL MEMBER JIMMY VAN BRAMER AND ASSEMBLY MEMBER CATHERINE T. NOLAN WILL HOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE TO PROTEST THE DISRUPTION OF THE 7 SUBWAY LINE ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 22ND, AT THE VERNON BLVD. SUBWAY STATION
Demand more comprehensive shuttle service during subway disruptions including a direct link to Grand Central Station and improve the public awareness campaign to allow residents more time to prepare for disruptions
New York City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and Assembly Member Catherine T. Nolan will stand with Community Board 2, small businesses, community organizations and residents to tell the MTA that closing down the 7 subway line for seven weekends is unacceptable, and the shuttle service provided as an alternative is completely inadequate. The Speaker, Council Member and Assembly Member are calling on the MTA to provide express bus service though the tunnel to Grand Central and to shed light on the crippling affect these closures have on small businesses and commuters.
Please see the accompanying letter to Jay Walder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the MTA, urgently requesting a meeting to discuss shuttle alternatives and the introduction of a more comprehensive public awareness campaign to alert citizens to subway closures.

Starting next weekend, there will be no 7 train between Grand Central and Queensboro Plaza and no service service for the next 10 weekends after that. According to NYC Transit says the suspension is do to the "necessary system upgrades, replacements, and other subway work."
