Dreaded 7 Train tunnel noise

Posted by dd at February 08. 2010

Well... the dreaded noise from the tunnel ventilation system is back!!!  And apparently it will continue on weekends for the next 6 or 7 weeks. In really bad news it will probably go 24 hours a day this coming 3 day weekend!!!  This is according to John Hoban (646-294-4511) who is the General Manager of the 7 Line. He said that they are finishing up the work that they began last year. He says that they stopped before they completed everything due to the complaints from the community! I told him that didnt make any sense as they knew they would eventually have to finish the work and they would hear from the community again but hes sticking to his story.... he says that there are noise dampening systems that would reduce the noise significantly but the MTA wont spend the money to install it.

Although highly annoying - the noise is a lot better than it was in years past. I'm pretty sure they've done some type of upgrades to minimize the noise from the fans.

From my vantagepoint (a high floor on the south side of the Citylights building), the noise is as loud as ever.  It still sounds just like old movies of London WWII during the blitz, with the air raid sirens going off.  There must be some sort of alarm siren attached to those fans to make such a noise.  High-power fans can be very loud but I've never known one to howl.  Didn't the MTA install some other quieter exhaust system during a previous extended round of repairs after local residents complained?

I am on a high floor on the south side too and its as noisy as it has always been. According to the 7 line Manager they did not installl anything to make it quieter. They did not want to spend the money to do it..
