Some of their prices are outrageous.  organic milk for $6 is crazy.  BUT, i bought a container of hummus that cost exactly the same as what it costs at Stop and Shop.  also, they are the only place in LIC that sells fresh cheeses, fish, meat, bread and they have brown rice sushi.  their produce prices seemed pretty in line with FreshDirect and you can pick it out yourself.  The local blueberries were actually a little cheaper then the greenmarket.  So, while there are a lot of things i would not buy there, they do serve a purpose.

I agree with everyone regarding the high prices at the Food Cellar.  My wife and I were stunned the 1st time we browsed through the store. Almost all of the prices were at least 25% more and we noticed a couple of items at about 85% more! For example, a brand of raw cheese we get at Trader Joe's for $3.99 was $7.50 at the Food Cellar!!!   Now we have learned that Food cellar is under investigation by the Federal Government for paying workers less than minimum wage.  It seems the owners of this store are attempting to squeeze as much profit as possible out of LIC resident because there isn't any competition in the area.  Well, as far as we're concerned we will continue to travel to Manhattan for it's lower prices - sounds funny right?

If I need something quick, I find myself running to the new local deli/bodega on 47th. If I need to buy lots of things, I go to Stop&Shop.

Maybe I'll use food cellar if I want a potato or two though... but even then I haven't checked to see how bad those prices are.

Like a few other people on this board, we walked in, saw the prices, and walked out empty handed.  I wonder how many other people have done this and how long it will take Food Cellar to get the message.  I wouldn't consider myself cheap either, but I'm not stupid either.  I hope this place changes quick or folds for someone else to come in.

PS - for the people who mentioned they think some prices were comparable to Fresh Direct or Stop and Shop, I would like to see some examples - b/c everything seems to be marked up well over 25%.
