Food Cellar - new food store in EastCoast
Up to Neighborhood Discussion
Has anyone noticed many of the brands carried at FoodCellar are the same as those carried at E&I?
It is nice to have meat and fish available in Hunters Point and the isles are nice and wide, but what we need are groceries not gourmet foods.
What really would be nice is a Trader Joes Great food, even better prices.
A box of Puffins cerial at FoodCellar $5.29. Same cerila at Trader Joes $3.49.
Maybe we could start a petition and lobby Trader Joes to come to Hunters Point
FoodCellar is good in many ways but the lack of familiar brands might be the cause of people leaving empty-handed. Amish Market and Fairway are not as expensive and carry a good mix of everything to suite all tastes. Organic foods can be hit or miss, some taste great, others not and end up in the trash making their purchase a very costly experiment.
BTW, the FoodCellar made to order pizza looks great ... can't wait to try it tomorrow!
The place seems expansive and well organized offering a ton of nice fresh food.
It will be interesting to see how E&I and FreshDirect change or not based on what they do.

I totally agree about the lack of familiar brands. It seems they have high priced brands which I do not recognize. However, while looking for parking the other day I couldn't get down 47th Road due to a "White Rose" tractor trailor unloading their products.
Funny, but I don't recall seeing any "White Rose" product on their shelves nor anything in the White Rose price range.
Coincidently, this morning on NBC they had a bit about many sushi restaurants passing off talapia for white tuna, among other fishy swaps.

White Rose may have been delivering to Duane Reade. They carry a lot of items both on their own and other labels that are typically found at DR.
I first read about the deceptive fish practices several months ago in the New York Times. It seems that passing tilapia off as a more expensive fish is the most common.
