Up to Neighborhood Discussion
Beginning Tuesday December 9th, Vernon Blvd. will be adorned with Holiday Lights for the first time ever in a display sponsored by Hunters Point Community Development Corporation, supported by State AssemblyWoman, Catherine Nolan, funded by Avalon Bay and Rockrose Corp and made possible by QueensWest Development Corporation, Paul Januszewski, President.
The show of lights starts at 50th Ave.and Vernon Blvd. with a Christmas Tree and a Menorah leading the way to dancing snowflakes and twinkling stars that prance their way above the Blvd to 44th Drive.
The members of HPCDC and President, Terri Adams take great pride in their on going efforts to promote community unity by embracing both the old and new population of Hunters Point.
Happy and Joyous Holidays to everyone!
This is great news and thanks to all the parties involved that made this happen. I have to say I did not notice them last night when I was coming back from work but that could be because I was in hurry. I will make sure to stop and admire the new ornaments tonight.
Thanks for your support, archie. This is a first for Vernon Blvd. Hope others take time to look up as they wend their way home tonight.
I must say that the Holiday lights have had a tremendous impact, not only by injecting a little holiday spirit into the community but by increasing my in store sales.I have gained 6 new customers as a direct response to the spotting of the holiday lights. These were people coming off the L.I.E. and driving to Costco they made the trip before but never bothered to really look at the stores in the area. The lights made these people see the retail stores for the first time, they shopped in my store, purchased lottery tickets and had a burger at P.J.Leaheys bar on the corner. The lights actually increased business by making those people stop and take notice also all I hear from everyone is how great the lights look at least 15 customers a day rave about the lights as well as those that live here . I am making a pledge thru the Hunters Point Merchants Association to contribute $25 a month in a holiday club plan to continue this annual tradition of holiday lighting. Every year it can become bigger and better if more store owners become involved and if each side street has a block captain, than those captains can organize residential holiday decorations on the side streets. We can create another reason that brings people to this community to shop,to purchase a condo,to get to know the hidden treasures of Hunters Point without having a expensive Business Improvement District driving everyone's taxes up. The Green Market also is another great impact on the community and another improvement without a B.I.D. especially in these tough economic times, no business has extra money to spend and no home owner has extra tax dollars to part with. I applaud the efforts of all those involved with these sensational benefits Thank You Rockrose,Avalon Bay,AssemblyWoman Catherine Nolan,Paul Januszewski Queenswest, and special Thanks to Queens Borough President Helen Marshall without whose continued support and belief in the Green Market and Crafts go Green fair it never would have been possible. Also the efforts of Terri Adams President of the Hunters Point Community Development Corporation and it's board members the unpaid volunteers that petitioned for the Green Market to be here and organized the Holiday Lighting as part of the Commercial Revitalization Project of Hunters Point.
Found some great pictures from this weeks Queens Chronicle:
