Sivercup wouldn't be for awhile, but I've heard for years that Costco wants to have ferry service and that seems more likely for an additional Queens stop in the near future.

Our favorite thing about NY Watertaxi: they let bicycles on all of the boats.

Staten Island Ferry = free
NY Water Taxi = $9 round-trip to 34th St. ($138.50 for a monthly pass, plus you probably still need a Metrocard for $76 a month)

Not a viable option for everyone (especially if the city builds moderate-income housing in the neighborhood). In my opinion, the city should provide some sort of ferry service, not just leave it to a private company. A bus into Manhattan would also be useful.

free? you are asking for terrible boats and schedules and service. i think the si ferry is free because it is part of nyc and there has to be a free connection either by car or on foot. just me thinking out loud. although i think $9 round trip is a bit heavy, it is a great way to travel, i love it and will be looking forward to taking it home. saw an amazing sunset a few weeks back. i should post a pic.

I never said the connection between LIC and Manhattan should be free (you may or may not remember that there used to be a small fee for the Staten Island Ferry not all that long ago). But I think $4.50 for a trip that takes about 5 minutes is steep for a regular commute, especially when you need to combine it with another form of transportation afterward. And what's wrong with the schedules on the Staten Island Ferry? I haven't taken it often but every 15 minutes during rush hour seems reasonable enough.

I agree that the water taxi makes for a pleasant evening trip once in a while, but I can't see making it a regular part of my commute considering where I work.
