Anything you create in your stuff is at first private and not viewable by other people.

If you want to create something like a news item, an event or your homepage and make it viewable to others you need to submit it to be reviewed. Once you have submitted it for review another person will review it and publish or reject it. If rejected you can re-edit and submit it again. If the item is published it will show up in the appropriate place on the site (I.E. a "News Item" will show up in Recent News and an "Event" will show up in the calendar) and it will be viewable by everyone.
