Civil disobediance -- the lame sort

Posted by jd at January 10. 2004
Twice today, I watched groups of dog walkers trot pass the "no dogs allowed" signs on the Peninsula Park lawn. A few let their dogs off the leash and let the happy canines frolic away.

The first group was shooed away by a ranger; the second did their thing until Fido got tired.

Perhaps the park needs to be surrounded with razor wire and users will have to show photo i.d. The small signs don't seem to be doing it.

I think we all need to accept the idea that some people are going to get past the "guards" and do whatever they want. We should try to stop them, but if we let ourselves get all stressed out and worried about it then we are defeating the purpose of the park. Supposedly, we are all fighting against dogs on the lawn (and, btw, I'm a dog-owner) because we want to enjoy it. But, if we let it become a source of stress and frustration, we are not enjoying it. It is part of life that some people will not obey the rules and will do things that are against the rules. While we should try to prevent that from happening as much as possible, it is counter-productive (and, yes, useless) to let them and their behavior ruin life. In other words -- get over it and enjoy the darned park!!!

On some topics, some people act like spoiled children. Their private wants trump community decisions supported by the majority of community members. They also yell, kick & threaten when they see the tide going against them.

I totally agree that we can't let neighbors who act like creeps ruin our day. I also think it's good to tell them that we think. You can always just say your piece & walk away. I know I will. Immature and thoughtless people need to feel the disapproval of their neighbors. That's why there's lots of dog doo on deserted blocks but far less on blocks where someone might be looking out the window.

Also good to remember that the neighbor who acts like a jerk on one subject may be ok on another. Mystery of life.

Cool.....when parents take their kids to frolic on the lawn, I doubt that others will have to do much at all. Never cross an NYC parent...........

Of course, the Canada Geese may trump us all.
