co-op insurance

i tried to get home owner's insurance through geico/ travelers and was informed that they would not insure a property that is within 1000 feet of water. has anyone had this kind of reply from an insurance company? what insurance company are other shareholders using? do we have access to a copy of the building's insurance policy? how do we find out what coverage the building's policy gives us in case of a fire in our apartment. from what i've read some buildings are responsible for rebuilding the basic apartment. any upgrades beyond the original spec are the responsibility of the shareholder.

Is that you Geek (or are there more than one)? Haven't you been at CL for over a year? If so, you haven't had any insurance?

"i tried to get home owner's insurance through geico/ travelers and was informed that they would not insure a property that is within 1000 feet of water. has anyone had this kind of reply from an insurance company?"

True. Geico hates water.

"what insurance company are other shareholders using?"

I use Allstate. I'm in good hands until disaster strikes. Some others use State Farm and MET I believe, also Prudential.

"do we have access to a copy of the building's insurance policy?"

I asked for and got a copy of our flood insurance policy but not our building policy.

"how do we find out what coverage the building's policy gives us in case of a fire in our apartment."

I believe our building policy (I hope) will cover the four walls, ceiling and floor - structure. My individual unit insurances covers personal chattel losses (theft, destruction) up to $45K, and personal injuries up to $100K. I think that is the basic.

Annual premium is around $200. I think its well worth the peace of mind.

Statefarms. No problems. Combine it with auto and it will pay for itself (reduction on combined auto and home more than pays for home.. don't know how, but it does).
