I watched someone stand a few feet outside of the Citylights door this morning with their dog. I was down towards the school, but when my dog was done, as I passed by I found this...

But Jake, this dog was obviously sick & I can't see how any of that mess could be picked or scooped up with a bag. Maybe the person ran their dog back up to their apt to clean the dog itself & grab some supplies to clean the mess & ask maintenance for help by hosing with water? I'm just trying to imagine what I would do if my dog got sick outside like that & all I had was a little poop bag with me. I would probably have to run back up to clean the dog & grab supplies to clean the mess. What would you do?

It would nice to think any of that true, but it wasn't.

That picture was taken about 15 minutes later, so they hadn't come right back down to clean it. I also asked at the front desk and the person had not asked them for help, cleaning or anything.

Sadly, this is not the first time with this dog or that person. The walker also likes to sit in the corner, right outside the front door and leave his cigarette butts on the ground (next to the school).

Ok, yeah, that sounds like really obnoxious behavior. I was just hoping for the best I guess.

I like your post nicksom....makes alot of sense and I completely agree.  I agree with everything being said here for the most part about the dogs

I know this isnt a solution to all, but I just got a new puppy...and when I walk him I make sure he pees/poops either in the street or if it is dire, the brick area...not the sidewalk.  Also, I bring a large water bottle out with me and pour it both the pee to significantly dilute it, and the poop to wash it a bit as well.  I would be more than willing to pay a fee as a pet owner, so long as the fee is ONLY to pet owners.  It wouldnt be fair to my fellow residents to have to incur any excess fees, no matter how small, because of my puppy.  There are already enough people in the building that are clearly not animal lovers, I wouldnt want any other reason for them to hate me, or my dog.

Thanks Ratedr1 - good luck with the puppy.  I also started carrying around a spray bottle - $1.99 at Duane Reade and it is very helpful to spray after my dog.  The back door is fine at CItylights - I have never had a problem.  Soon our facade scaffolding will be down - and maybe our sidewalks will be cleaned by Mother Nature.

Responsible pet ownership is something to be proud of. Too many people get a dog and they don't know the amount of responsibility that it takes - and our shelters are full of great dogs that become unwanted pets.
