Air Conditioners

Posted by hsirg at July 07. 2008

Does anyone have recent experience with replacing the A/C units in their apartments. I have the original McQuay units which do not seem to operate that well anymore. Interested in information on brands purchased, contractor used, energy efficiency options and of course cost. Thanks.

I know someone who has done it but it wasn't a slam dunk meaning they were not extremely happy with the outcome.

The options are pretty much limited to replacing it with the same types of units as far as I know although the new units should be quieter and more energy efficient.

I am considering doing it next year.

You may wish to visit McQuay on 21st St and look at the new units available: http://www.premairny.com/contact.asp

Also, have you cleaned your filter at least twice a year?  Have you oiled the two fan motors and pulled the unit to oil the two ports on the compressor motor?  Have you straightened and vacuumed the cooling blade surfaces?  http://www.queenswest.com/help/howto/how-to-maintain-mcquay-ac-units

McQuay will schedule this service, if you wish.  The new units have sealed bearings, larger compressor surfaces, larger filters, more powerful fan motors and squirrel cages as well as remote control options.
