Neighborhood safety & humming through air vent
Up to Citylights Discussion
Hi, I'm moving into the building tomorrow and am a bit concerned about neighborhood safety. Up until what time is it considered safe to walk home from the subway alone at night?
Also, I've noticed an annoying hum coming through the apartment's air vent. Is that normal for the building?
Thanks a lot.

There are a couple of threads on safety already (one linked below) but I would say the majority consider it pretty safe.
The hum could be anything from the LIE to your next door neighbor. Could you be more specific?

I have been asking myself the same question: What is that annoying hum (sort of a motor noise)and what can be done about it?
First, why would you move here if you have questions about the safety of the neighborhood? Isn't that something you think about before you move?
Second, as for the safety of the neighborhood, I have lived in this neighborhood, although I am on the other side of 11th, for 10 years and I have never felt unsafe. I have walked home from Vernon Blvd after many a drink at the pub in the wee hours of the morn and not felt unsafe. Even with the prostitution that was going on back in the day.

Becca, thank you for your response. Regarding your comments, I was simply trying to get recommendations from people who live in Citylights as to whether a woman should take a taxi home if returning alone from Manhattan at 1 a.m or at 10 p.m. I'm not that familiar with the other side of 11th, but 5th between 50th and 48th is quite deserted at night, with no private homes, only commercial buildings, garages/parking lots and a playground.
