In a Astoria Times Ledger article today, the Queens Borough President Helen Marshall said that there will looking to make Long Island City more pedestrian-friendly as part of the overall growth of Queens and looking forward to the 2012 Olympic bid.
The New York Daily News is reporting that Mayor Bloomberg is set to unveil the 2012 Olympic village designs today and pick a winner by May 2004. The designs will be on display in Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central and at www.nyc2012.com . Of course, the Olympic Village, if New York wins the 2012 Olympics, is set to be here in Long Island City. The Astoria Times Ledger is reporting that Community Board 2 (CB 2) has approved the plan to rezone Hunters Point . The plan includes opening up the area for more artist studios and restaurants.

On the agenda is the discussion of Avalon's bid to give up the smaller property for a Queens West library and instead build the next tower up to 40 stories. Avalon has agreed to hold a meeting about the proposed changes to the Avalon Riverview II (or North). The meeting is being held in the Avalon Riverview (I or South) meeting room, from 7pm to 8pm on Wednesday, May 5th. Discussion is over in the neighborhood discussion board . An article in the New York Times this morning talks not only about the known new Avalon and Rockrose buildings but two new 28 story Condos to be developed just to the North of Queens West . It is now down to five cities now that the Olympic Committee has picked London, Paris, Madrid, Moscow and New York City as the finalists. The four cities that failed to make the big cut were: Istanbul, Leipzig, Havana, and Rio de Janeiro. The final selection will be made on July 6th, 2005. Queens West is the proposed site of the Olympic Village for the 2012 games.
"A group of concerned neighborhood residents have set up a community meeting open to the public with our State Assembly (37th District) person, Catherine Nolan. The meeting will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2004 at 7:00 p.m.
The location of the meeting is the school cafeteria on the 2nd Floor of Public School 78 (Robert Wagner Jr School) in the Citylights building at 48-09 Center Boulevard, LIC, NY 11109.
The meeting will be largely informational to help educate the community about the changes to the Queens West Master Plan that Avalon Bay requested for Parcels 8 and 9 and which Queens West Development Corporation has
approved. Representatives of Avalon Bay and QWDC are not expected. This is a chance for the community to learn more about the situation and find out from
a public official what might be done to stop a major master plan amendment process which so far has not sought or incorporated any meaningful input
from the Hunter's Point community. Next steps and ideas for collective action will be a focus."

The Queens Chronicle has an article about the Community Board 2's concern of Rockrose's new open park . From the story, it seems like the part may not be open to everyone and may be run by the City and not by the State like Gantry Park. It also seems like the Pepsi plant sign might not make it into the plans like it was expected to.
The New York Times has an article about Rockrose Development Corporation plans to build on the 21 acre Pepsi Plant site . Of interest is the plans for 3,200 apartments and the plans of what they are going to do with the Pepsi sign. While demolition seems to have already begun, the Queens Chronicle is reporting that full construction on the Pepsi Plant building by Rockrose is set to start in August 2004 . As with all construction plans I will believe it when I see it but for now, it looks good.

It looks like a whole set of Queens Parks will be getting a chunk of the $25 Million that Mayor Bloomberg has earmarked for City Parks. According the the story, Queensbridge Park, DeMarco Park, Astoria Park, Hellgate Field, Hallets Cove, Socrates and Sculpture Parkfollowing Queens parks will get part of the funding.

The new design for the World Trade Center Freedom Tower has been submitted as a proposal. It rises 1,776 feet (1776 ring a bell?) and includes 63 floors of office space and 2.6 million square feet of commercial space.
